October 11-13 – 11th Somali Studies International Association Congress in Lillehammer, Norway,  hosted by the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue in cooperation with IFTIIN Somali-Norwegian Knowledge Centre

September

September 13 – Nuruddin Farah lecture at OSU. The title of his lecture is “Remembering Somalia: A Writer Speaks”. The thirteenth annual Diversity Lecture & Cultural Arts Series event will be held at 4:30 pm in Saxbe Auditorium, Drinko Hall, 55 West 12th Avenue. A reception and book signing will immediately follow the lecture. RSVP: waugh.2@osu.edu

June

June 29 – 3rd Annual Ohio Somali Graduation and Scholarship Program and Teacher Workshop. The Teacher Workshop will be 2-5 pm. The Graduation and Scholarship celebration begins at 5:30 pm. Both events will be held at the Aladdin Conference Center, 3850 Steltzer Road, Columbus. April 19 – Children and Families of the Somali Diaspora. Event for University of Wisconsin, Green Bay Common Theme 2011-2012 ‘Celebrating Differences: Creating Community‘. Leslie Moore will give a talk on the Somali Studies for Educators project and her research on the educational experiences of young Somali children in Central Ohio . 

April 6 – Somali Diaspora’s Role in Humanitarian Relief. Event organized by EndFamine in the Horn of Africa. The Ohio State University Student-Alumni Council Room, 6-9 pm. Speakers include Professor Abdi Samatar (University of Minnesota), Dr. Sadia Aden (Adar Foundation), Filsan Darman (Aadamiga USA), Sahnun Mohamud (WakeUp Somalia).

March

March 25-28 –The Youth/Dhalinyarada at the Whittier Gallery of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Documentary project profiling thirteen young Somali men living in Minnesota and actively and positively engaged in their community.

March 8 – International Women’s Day Celebration. Ohio Statehouse Atrium, 10:30-12:30. Four women of the Central Ohio Somali community were honored by the Ohio House of Representatives for their leadership and contributions to the community: Khadra Mohamed (President of the Center for Somali Women’s Advancement), Marian Ghedi (Director of United Somali Refugee Women), Marian Omar (community activist), and Sindiya Darman (activist, writer, poet, and educator).

March 2 – Im/migration and Ohio: Local Perspectives. Panel featuring the Somali Documentary Project. 2 -4:00, 014 Psychology Building. Download the flyer.

January

January 30, 2012 – Champions of Change: Trailblazers in American Diaspora Communities. The White House honored as Champions of Change 14 leaders in American Diaspora communities with roots in the Horn of Africa. Three Champions of Change are from Central Ohio: Abdi Roble (founder and executive director of the Somali Documentary Project and Visiting Scholar at OSU’s Center for African Studies), Sagal Ali (Ready to Read Corps of Columbus Metropolitan Library), Ilhan Dahir (founder and president of Interfaith Service Youth Corps). January 27-28 – Somalia at Crossroads: Foreign Intervention, Humanitarian Crisis, and Aspirations for Statehood. Conference at the Ohio State University, January 27-28th, 2012. Watch video of keynote presentations by Deborah Malac (U.S. State Department) and Abukar Arman (Somali Special Envoy to the U.S.). Watch a newscast about the conference, and/or read the Final Communique generated by conference participants.

2011

November

November 7 – WOSU Columbus Collaborative Columbus Speaks: Women, War, and Peace. Representatives of several refugee communities in Columbus talk about the issues raised in the PBS series ‘Women, War, and Peace’ and ‘Nasro’s Journey’.

October

October 18 – WOSU broadcasts ‘Women, War, and Resettlement: Nasro’s Journey’, the newest video documentary by the Somali Documentary Project. The 27-minute video tells the story of one Somali woman’s journey from her war-torn homeland to a new home in Columbus, Ohio. Watch the video on youtube.

September

September 4 – Screening of ‘Hawo’s Dinner Party: The New Face of Southern Hospitality’, followed by discussion. Hosted at the Columbus Center of Science and Industry (COSI) by Community Refugee & Immigration Services, The Somali Documentary Project, the OSU Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and ethnicity.
